Filipino Grand­mas­ter Ro­ge­lio “Joey” An­to­nio Jr. beat Hun­gar­ian International Master Peter Hardic­say in the ninth and fi­nal round Sun­day to fin­ish third in the blitz side event of the 27th World Se­nior Chess Cham­pi­onship in Ac­qui Terme, Italy.

The 55-year-old pride of Cala­pan, Ori­en­tal Min­doro, amassed 7.0 points on seven wins and two losses, tail­ing Ukrainian IM Alexan­der Reprint­sev, who won with 8.5 points, fol­lowed by Ger­man Rolf Fritsch with 7.5 points.

In stan­dard play of the World Se­niors, An­to­nio is tied for the lead with four oth­ers at 5.0 points af­ter six rounds of the 50 and over di­vi­sion.

GM Eu­gene Torre, on the other hand, has 4.5 points and is right be­hind the 6-man lead pack in the 65 and over di­vi­sion.

Ju­nior Cham­pi­onship

Mean­while, IM Paulo Ber­sam­ina beat Chile’s Fran­ncisco Javier Araya in the first round of the World Ju­nior Cham­pi­onship be­ing held in Tarvi­sio.

FM Stephen Rome Pangili­nan drew with Nor­weigian IM Johan-Se­bas­tian Chris­tiansen while John Marvin Mi­ciano yielded to Is­raeli GMOri Kobo.

In the Girls’ Cham­pi­onship, WIM Marie An­toinette San Diego bowed to Rus­sian WFM Bibis­ara As­saubayeva while Fran­cois Marie Mag­pily drew with Slove­nian WFMTeja Vidic.
