ANTONIO SETTLES FOR THIRD IN WORLD SENIOR BLITZ TOURNEY
Filipino Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. beat Hungarian International Master Peter Hardicsay in the ninth and final round Sunday to finish third in the blitz side event of the 27th World Senior Chess Championship in Acqui Terme, Italy.
The 55-year-old pride of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro, amassed 7.0 points on seven wins and two losses, tailing Ukrainian IM Alexander Reprintsev, who won with 8.5 points, followed by German Rolf Fritsch with 7.5 points.
In standard play of the World Seniors, Antonio is tied for the lead with four others at 5.0 points after six rounds of the 50 and over division.
GM Eugene Torre, on the other hand, has 4.5 points and is right behind the 6-man lead pack in the 65 and over division.
Meanwhile, IM Paulo Bersamina beat Chile’s Franncisco Javier Araya in the first round of the World Junior Championship being held in Tarvisio.
FM Stephen Rome Pangilinan drew with Norweigian IM Johan-Sebastian Christiansen while John Marvin Miciano yielded to Israeli GMOri Kobo.
In the Girls’ Championship, WIM Marie Antoinette San Diego bowed to Russian WFM Bibisara Assaubayeva while Francois Marie Magpily drew with Slovenian WFMTeja Vidic.
