A Brand-New Start

Philippine Tatler - - EDITOR’S NOTE -

f I were not King of France, I would choose to be a citizen of Venice,” said Henry III centuries ago. Today, I find myself sharing the same sentiment for this otherworldly, iconic, historic, and unique city that has the power to really get under your skin. Strip away the throngs of tourists, the oftentimes rude waiters, and the expensive water taxis and you discover a city that is absolutely magnificent and without comparison.

The annual Asia’s Most Stylish [AMS] shoot of the respective choices of eight editions of Asia Tatler has always been done in an Asian country. For 2016, however, AMS moved up a step higher by shifting continents and doing the shoot in Venice. To be held outside the region, to be photographing the fashionable ladies against Venice’s historic façades and iconic canals—these make the 2016 AMS project ultra special. Of course, the Philippine Tatler has to have an extra special lady as well to represent it. So we chose the multi-faceted and gorgeous Stephanie Zubiri-Crespi.

We accompanied Stephanie on the trip that turned out to be an adventure of sorts, thanks to Steph’s glamorous role-model mum, Vicky, who joined us on the first leg. On the plane, Vicky was non-stop in telling Steph what to wear, how to pose, as all doting mothers do. We parted ways in Doha, as her loving “stage mother” headed to Yugoslavia and Steph and I to Venice.

The three-day shoot was exciting; we met the rest of the Most Stylish ladies from all over the region. We bonded well with Malaysia’s Zaida Ibrahim, whose father was a former ambassador to the Philippines and thus, knew the country quite well. Meet the chosen few in “Asia’s Most Stylish” (p. 1 ).

Stephanie did not fail to do us proud. I have known her from the first time she came out on the cover of this magazine with her International School Manila classmates back in July 2003; since then, she has impressed me as a confident, intelligent, and passionate lady. Seeing her now—married and with two handsome sons, an accomplished TV host, a writer and certified gourmand—makes her even more beautiful. Read all about this amazing woman in “She’s All That” (p. 1 ).

Also in this issue, we offer a very informative must-read. As we start the year and look towards the months ahead, five top business leaders and one media personality guide us with their observations on how the economy will fare vis-àvis the local and global events transpiring. They seem to still be positive but given uncertainties they themselves acknowledge, will they remain optimistic about 2017? Find out in “Voices that Matter” (p. 16 ).

We are off to a good start for 2017. We are excited and ready to see what this year has in store. As always, we promise you our commitment to excellence and raising the standard of luxury lifestyle magazines even more. Wishing you a great year ahead! — Anton San Diego Editor-in-Chief
