Ten years ago to this month, we launched our first ever book Real Home Ideas 1: 21 Homes 101 Tips (right). I remember the images were in hundreds of transparencies that we had to view one by one with a magnifying loupe—yes, this was predigital photography, folks! And then we had the bright idea of throwing a book launch, but we didn’t even have money for catering! Our thenpublisher Tina Kanapi ended up baking dozens of brownies by herself.
We honestly thought no one would attend our launch. Remember, this was before social media, and quite a number of people didn’t have email addresses yet. But guests, readers, and designers showed up, and the book itself sold out in a few months. In fact, many readers still ask for that first book (sorry, no more hard copies, but you can still download it from the online Summit Newsstand instead).
