Ten years ago to this month, we launched our first ever book Real Home Ideas 1: 21 Homes 101 Tips (right). I re­mem­ber the images were in hun­dreds of trans­paren­cies that we had to view one by one with a mag­ni­fy­ing loupe—yes, this was predig­i­tal pho­tog­ra­phy, folks! And then we had the bright idea of throw­ing a book launch, but we didn’t even have money for cater­ing! Our then­pub­lisher Tina Kanapi ended up bak­ing dozens of brown­ies by her­self.

We hon­estly thought no one would at­tend our launch. Re­mem­ber, this was be­fore so­cial me­dia, and quite a num­ber of peo­ple didn’t have email ad­dresses yet. But guests, read­ers, and de­sign­ers showed up, and the book it­self sold out in a few months. In fact, many read­ers still ask for that first book (sorry, no more hard copies, but you can still down­load it from the on­line Sum­mit News­stand in­stead).
