ON their fif­teenth wed­ding an­niver­sary, tech­ni­cal writer-turned-en­tre­pre­neur Myrla ta­mayo gave her hus­band a spe­cial gift: she had started work­ing on the ren­o­va­tion of their bed­room. Myrla would have wanted to fin­ish the pro­ject, but due to health rea­sons, she had to quit her job of five years.

“She was heart­bro­ken, more so be­cause she couldn’t fin­ish the pro­ject,” her hus­band Ben­jie says.

Around the same time, she wrote to Real Liv­ing ask­ing for help. She had wanted to redo their fam­ily room, which was for­merly her dad’s bed­room be­fore he passed away. Ben­jie of­fered to help send the let­ters, but at the last minute, he de­cided to add an­other en­try, this time from him­self. “i wish to sur­prise my wife by ren­o­vat­ing our bed­room,” he wrote.

the call from RL came later than they ex­pected, but it couldn’t have come at a bet­ter time, as Myrla had just cel­e­brated the com­ple­tion of her mas­ter’s de­gree. She re­calls, “We ex­tended the mas­ter bed­room be­cause kids like to hang out here, but at the same time, we needed an area for sleep­ing, too. We didn’t have enough bud­get for the full ren­o­va­tion, so hang­gang ex­ten­sion lang ta­laga siya.” Myrla and Ben­jie have three kids: teenagers Biel and Bet­tina and fouryear-old Bai­ley.
