LAYERING PILLOWS

Real Living (Philippines) - - Real Homes -

One of the noteworthy decorative details in this coastal home is the generous layering of pillows. But before you pile on the cushions, here are two techniques for layering pillows the designer way.

On the bed: First, start with the biggest pillows: a pair of king-size, 20”x36” bed pillows. Follow these with one queen-size 20”x30” pillow. Add two smaller, squareshaped throw pillows, and finish it off with a long bolster pillow for layering or contrast.

On the sofa: Always begin layering from the ends of the sofa going in. Start layering with two large, 24"x24” square pillows. Work your way towards the center of the sofa with slightly smaller pillows. Accent the sofa’s middle with the smallest, rectangular pillow (called a kidney pillow). Don’t use pillows with the same fabric as your sofa’s upholstery, or they will just disappear into the seats. Get pillowcases in colors that are complementary to your upholstery, and use an accent color for your kidney pillow. —Original text by Katherine Lopez
