2 Ships Collide off Talisay
Many of the nearly 900 passengers of the M/ V St. Thomas Aquinas were sleeping when the vessel collided with the cargo ship Sulpicio Express Siete on the night of Aug. 16, 2013.
The Aquinas sank within 15 minutes of impact, the Coast Guard later said. And the ship remained underwater, still near Lawis Ledge off the shores of Talisay City, at the end of the year.
The collision left 116 people dead. Technical divers were expected, early in 2014, to report whether it was safe to let the Aquinas remain underwater, considering how many other vessels had previously run aground in that vicinity.
