Arguably the biggest mediarelated story in Cebu in 2013, the Regional Trial Court ( RTC) found journalist Leo Lastimosa guilty of libel. Judge Raphael Yrastorza said that based on Lastimosa’s previous columns and broadcast commentaries, it was clear that his column piece “Si Doling Kawatan ( Doling the Thief)” referred to then Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

Judge Yrastorza ordered Lastimosa, manager of the radio station DYAB and news anchor of ABS- CBN Cebu, to pay a fine of P2,000 and pay the former governor P2 million in moral damages.

The column, published in The Freeman on June 29, 2007, had described Doling as a fishmonger who was “a thief, corrupt, arrogant, vindictive and cruel.” Garcia herself took the witness stand.

Lastimosa has filed an appeal.
