City notes increase in tourist arrivals
IT’S MORE fun and cooler in the Summer Capital.
A total of 1,294,906 tourists visited the city last year representing 16.1 percent increase as compared to 2015 according to city planning and development office head Evelyn Cayat.
Cayat said Baguio traditionally experiences peaks in tourist arrivals during the Panagbenga festival, Holy Week and Christmas seasons.
She added on the national level, the tourism industry contributed an estimated 8.6 percent or about P1.2 billion to the Philippine economy in 2016.
The country’s domestic tourism expenditure grew from P1.7 billion in 2015 to P2.1 billion last year for an increase of 19.1 percent.
On another matter, Cayat revealed the number of enrollees in the city’s elementary and secondary schools increased by 5.1 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively, for school year 2016-2017.
Although enrollees in the tertiary level declined by 12.8 percent, she said that enrollees in technical-vocational courses increased by 4.5 percent.
