City notes in­crease in tourist ar­rivals

IT’S MORE fun and cooler in the Sum­mer Cap­i­tal.

A to­tal of 1,294,906 tourists vis­ited the city last year rep­re­sent­ing 16.1 per­cent in­crease as com­pared to 2015 ac­cord­ing to city plan­ning and de­vel­op­ment of­fice head Eve­lyn Cayat.

Cayat said Baguio tra­di­tion­ally ex­pe­ri­ences peaks in tourist ar­rivals dur­ing the Panag­benga fes­ti­val, Holy Week and Christ­mas sea­sons.

She added on the na­tional level, the tourism in­dus­try con­trib­uted an es­ti­mated 8.6 per­cent or about P1.2 bil­lion to the Philip­pine econ­omy in 2016.

The coun­try’s do­mes­tic tourism ex­pen­di­ture grew from P1.7 bil­lion in 2015 to P2.1 bil­lion last year for an in­crease of 19.1 per­cent.

On an­other mat­ter, Cayat re­vealed the num­ber of en­rollees in the city’s ele­men­tary and sec­ondary schools in­creased by 5.1 per­cent and 1.1 per­cent, re­spec­tively, for school year 2016-2017.

Although en­rollees in the ter­tiary level de­clined by 12.8 per­cent, she said that en­rollees in tech­ni­cal-vo­ca­tional cour­ses in­creased by 4.5 per­cent.
