Mayor hails city’s safety sta­tus recog­ni­tion

BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Do­mo­gan on Wed­nes­day hailed the city’s recog­ni­tion as one of the safest cities in South­east Asia say­ing it is the re­sult of the in­ces­sant joint ef­forts of the govern­ment and the com­mu­nity.

“I’m glad that the col­lec­tive ef­forts ex­erted by our po­lice force, pri­vate part­ners and vol­un­teers down to the barangay level in main­tain­ing peace in our City are fi­nally good re­sults so much so that we are now be­ing given recog­ni­tion in that as­pect,” the mayor said.

“It is re­ally good news for our City and I thank all our part­ners for their con­tri­bu­tions with the hope that we will be able to sus­tain if not sur­pass our achieve­ments.”

Re­ports cir­cu­lated last week that the City was in­cluded among the ten safest cities in South­east Asia based on data re­leased by Num­beo, which ac­cord­ing to the Wow Cordillera web­site is “the world's largest data­base of user con­trib­uted data about cities and coun­tries world­wide.”

“It pro­vides cur­rent and timely in­for­ma­tion on world liv­ing con­di­tions in­clud­ing cost of liv­ing, hous­ing in­di­ca­tors, health care, traf­fic, crime and pol­lu­tion,” the site said.

Cit­ing Num­beo data,

the Philippine Star re­ported that Baguio City placed sixth in the list of cities with the low­est crime and high­est safety rates post­ing 40.57 per­cent crime and 59.43 per­cent safety in­dexes.

It joined four other cities from the Philip­pines in the list: Valen­zuela City, at sec­ond place with 25.21 per­cent and 74.79 per­cent crime and safety rates re­spec­tively; Davao City, fourth place with 28.79 per­cent and 71.21 per­cent crime and safety rates; Makati City, fifth place with 39.56 and 60.44 per­cent rat­ings and Cebu City, eighth place with 44.28 and 55.72 per­cent.

Sin­ga­pore topped the list with 16.23 per­cent crime and 83.77 per­cent safety rates.

Com­plet­ing the list were Chi­ang Mai in Thai­land, third place with 28.72 per­cent crime and 71.29 per­cent safety rates; Bali in In­done­sia, seventh with 42.46 and 57.54 per­cent; Pe­nang in Malaysia, ninth place with 45 and 55 per­cent and Bangkok in Thai­land, tenth with 47.06 and 52.94 per­cent rat­ings.
