Apprehension of forest products dwindle in CAR
APPREHENDED forest products in the Cordillera Administrative Region for the first quarter of 2018 dipped compared to the same period in 2017 based on a report by the Cordillera Regional Task Force (CRTF) on Anti-Illegal Logging.
The interagency alliance saw the total number of apprehended forest products drop from 18,729.20 board feet in 2017 to 9,888.88 board feet for the first three months of 2018. This is a decline by almost 50 percent in total confiscations and apprehensions in the installed CRTF checkpoints in the region.
Ronaldo Barongan, ecosystems management specialist II of the DENR-CAR’s Enforcement Division (ED) attributed this development to the intensified implementation of environmental laws by the different agencies comprising the task force.
Barongan also noted the determined efforts of the DENR in filing charges against perpetrators of environmental violations especially on illegal logging.
“Medyo takot na din sila ngayon,” Barongan pointed out referring to illegal loggers.
Barongan quipped the current statistics can also mean that environmental violators could also have found other means to carry out their illegal trade.
“Pwede ring mas naging magaling na din sila,” he said.
Barongan pointed out the intensified information, education and communication campaign the CRTF performed to encourage community participation in the fight against deforestation in the Cordilleras.
“Local communities have become more responsible in forest protection and give out reports to local authorities, of which prompt response is given in return,” he added.
Moreover, the patrol efforts of the different Bantay Gubat under the Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan (PAMANA) program is starting to pay off as visibility in hot spot areas is being observed.
Helping the cause of the task force is the establishment of additional checkpoints and the establishment of DENR Ranger stations in 2017.
Meanwhile the CRTF also ntercepted one Isuzu Elf bearing Plate Number TRR 544 in Poblacion, Paracelis, Mountain Province loaded with 1,320.44 board feet of Tuai and Bakan lumber. Meanwhile, another Hyundai Grace Van with Plate Number WSY 254 was apprehended by the PNP in Abatan, Buguias, Benguet carrying 400 board feet of pine lumber and pine cones during a joint DENR and PNP checkpoint.
