CAGAYAN de Oro City pride Ruelle “Tawing” Canino bagged a gold medal once again in the 18th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championships 10-under girl standard classical event held in Malaysia.

The 9-year-old Canino, a pride of Kauswagan Central School, finished an impressive seven points in the eight-round Swiss System Tournament.

She posted seven wins and a lone defeat at the hands of her PH teammate Antonela Berthe Racasa.

Canino started hot playing undefeated in the first four rounds for a full-point lead in the field before Racasa slowed her down in fifth.

Racasa is the 10-under girls gold medalist in this year’s National Age Group Chess Championships held in Cebu City where she first defeated Canino before handing another one in the ASEAN.

But, the Oro chesser—last year’s 8-under gold medalist— bounced back with a rousing finish as she managed to sweep the last three rounds.

PH compatriots Daren dela Cruz and Racasa were tied at 6.5 points each, but the latter prevailed in the fight for second place via superior tie-break points.
