INCUMBENT barangay Macasandig kagawad Nixon Baban was among the early birds who filed their certificate of candidacy (COC) at the City Commission on Elections (Comelec) here yesterday. And, hold your breath, they’re seeking the city’s top post.

Baban was the first to file his COC yesterday morning and is running for mayor. He said he will bring back the environment issues on the table, which he said, has been set aside for a while.

Baban ran as City Councilor under Mayor Oscar Moreno’s previous party, the Liberal Party in the last 2016 elections but lost.

Member of the press Benjamin Contreras is also running for mayor for the 2019 midterm elections. Contreras said the city still faces many problems that needs to be addressed.

“I am running not for myself, but for the people. Ang atong syudad daghan problema ug atong atubangon ni tanan kung modaog kita,” he said.

Comelec Officer lawyer Ramil Acol, meanwhile, urged individuals to file their COCs early.

He also reminded aspirants to be extra careful when filling up their COCs.

“Come early because the filing is set only until 5 p.m., beyond that, we won’t entertain your submission anymore,” he said.

Comelec offices will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. up to October 17 while the campaign period for senator and party-list groups will be from February 12 to May 11, according to the calendar of activities released by the Comelec for the polls.

As for candidates for the House of Representatives and elective regional, provincial, city and municipal positions, the campaign period will be from March 30 to May 11.
