A Filipino-American couple on vacation from the United States died when their pick-up hit this tree in Barangay Ocaña, Carcar City early yesterday. Eight of their passengers suffered injuries.

A FILIPINO-AMERICAN and his wife were killed while eight others were hurt Sunday after the pick-up truck he was driving rammed a tree in Barangay Ocaña, Carcar City.

Keith Rosel, 36, from Barangay Poblacion, Sibonga town, was in his blue pickup truck with his wife, Nygile, and eight of their relatives when the accident happened at 5:45 a.m. yesterday.

PO1 Dennis Cabajar, traffic investigator of the Carcar City Police Station, said Rosel, his wife and relatives were reportedly going to Sibonga after a night out in Cebu City when, upon passing Barangay Ocaña, the pick-up truck suddenly started moving toward the sidewalk.

As the vehicle started encroaching on the sidewalk, it suddenly fell down a concrete ditch then toppled and slammed against a tree.

Some of the couple’s relatives, who were sleeping at the back of the truck, were accidentally thrown off from the vehicle.

Dead on arrival

After being rescued by emergency responders, Rosel and his wife were imme- diately brought to the Carcar City Provincial Hospital, but both died on the way.

The couple reportedly sustained major injuries.

Of the couple’s eight relatives who were in the truck, about six were referred to a private hospital in Cebu City for further medical attention.

The injured were identified as Erwin Llinos, 39; Nikkame Rosel, 19; Florian Anuda, 20; Melody Cantona, 24; Ariel Rosel, 23; Primitivo Rosel, 54; Edcel Rosel, 19; and Stephen Rosel, 23.

Cabajar said Rosel, who was identi- fied as the driver, may have dozed off while driving his pick-up truck.

Affair

Cabajar said that based on their interviews with the couple’s relatives, Rosel and his wife had taken their relatives to the city the night before to treat them.

In an ABS-CBN.com report, Rosel, his wife and relatives were in Cebu City the day before to attend a family reunion.

The investigator said Rosel and his wife are based in the United States, but would frequently come back to Cebu to spend their vacation.
