Cebu Pop: Songwriting completion, not singing contest
SONGWRITING. I should emphasize here again that the annual Cebu Popular Music Festival is a songwriting competition, not a singing contest. This emphasis is in answer to an accusation from a Spotlight reader who insists that the yearly event is not a songwriting competition but is actually a singing contest disguised as a songwriting festival. As the festival’s publicity officer, let me clarify here that the Cebu Pop, as the event is called for brevity, has always been and will always be a songwriting competition. Since its birth in 1980, this event has not been known as a singing contest.
SINGERS. But it’s true that the Cebu Pop has produced several champions that are now hitting it big in the music scene here and abroad. Vina Morales (Sharon Magdayao in real life), Sheryn Regis, Ann Fegi, Girlie Lapinid-Laspiñas, Archie Marcial and Elmer Cabahug (not the basketball star) are just some of the Cebu Pop interpreters that continue to make us Cebuanos so proud.
SCREENING. Next month, the members of the Cebu Pop screening committee shall choose the songs for the magic 12. I should also stress here that the committee does not have any idea as to the composers’ identity until the magic 12 entries shall have been picked and the composers’ names revealed. So through this column, may I remind interested composers to submit their entries on or before Wednesday, Aug. 31.
TELESERYE. Parasan sa Kaalam (Vineyard of Knowledge) is a Cebuano teleserye that focuses on the importance of education. It will soon air nightly over Cebu Catholic Television Network channel 47. Mandaue City College president Dr. Paulus Cañete is the producer of this teleserye. He said he only wants to emphasize the point that it is through education that an individual could easily hurdle the challenges of life. To me, Dr. Cañete should be congratulated for coming up with this type of teleserye.
PAGEANT. The Asian Learning College (ALC) will hold its Miss ALC 2016 beauty pageant on Thursday, Sept. 1, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the LapuLapu City Auditorium. Best of luck to the contestants.
