The ups and downs of life

- EVELYN R. LUAB eveluab@yahoo.com

We all know that there are times when we are down and there are times when we recover. What helps families to recover is when we stick together.

There are families with growing children who know that, somehow, togetherness is what will make them survive. There were times when we were down but we were able to recover.

My sister pointed out to me when we were talking of preparing for rising prices. She said, “Let’s take the example of one whole papaya. This costs around P100. To cut costs, I can still buy a slice of papaya at only P20. I can still eat my papaya and save a large amount.” If we cook at home and save on ingredients, a certain amount of savings can still be had.

My househelp came back from our neighbor’s house with a small bundle of malunggay leaves. When I asked her how come, she answered, “Our neighbor is very generous, Ma’am. They give to whoever asks.” I guess our neighbor is a believer of what goes around comes around, too. Maybe that’s what we need this 2017. When we share, we are able to give also to those who need our help.

Medicines are expensive but we can save by going to a generic pharmacy. We buy our vitamins where there are discounts and the savings can go to vegetables and fruits. One does not have to buy the entire big bunch of bananas. Some fruits can be shared by the children.

I have heard mothers say to their children: “No dear, we can’t afford sweets or snacks today. We can all eat together this Sunday and we can still be happy.”

Rising prices will really come and we just have to prepare for the coming hardships. Families who stick together will somehow pull through when the hard times come.

We still see so many people living on sidewalks asking for food. The Bible speaks of almsgiving and taking care of the poor as our duty to our neighbor.

We need to adjust our lifestyles and our attitude toward wasting food.

People who still smoke cigarettes should realize that they are just burning their hard-earned money or the hard-earned money of their parents into thin air.

We know that discipline, proper training of our young are really what we need to do if we want to make the poor feel our concern.

There are so many ways where we can adjust our lifestyles. If families will just cooperate, somehow, we will survive.
