DOE ASKS FOR DEFENSE DEPARTMENT'S HELP WITH ENERGY FACILITIES
The Department of Energy has asked the Department of National Defense (DND) to help in securing energy facilities in Mindanao, which has been placed under martial law for 60 days. Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said he has already sent a letter-request to the DND for the assistance to secure power plants, transmission tower, distribution facilities and oil depots in southern Philippines and “other vulnerable areas nationwide.” He said he also convened the interagency task force on securing these facilities. President Rodrigo Duterte has declared martial law in the entire Mindanao amid the attack of Maute Group, which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, in Marawi City. The militants have burned some establishments, including the city jail.
