Man killed in Mandaue ‘freak accident’
A motorcycle driver died after a lamppost fell on him when it was hit was by a container van that made a turn to U.N. Ave. from D. M. Cortes Street in Mandaue City yesterday afternoon.
It took three hours before the container truck was removed using the crane truck of the City’s Department of General Services.
Glenn Antigua, chief for operations of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue, said the accident resulted in heavy traffic, causing some passengers to miss their flights.
Antigua said that Joser Potayre, the truck driver, may have lost control of his vehicle because he was running at high speed when he made the turn at 3:50 p.m.
Potayre was on his way to the Mactan Export Processing Zone.
The container separated from the van, and hit the lamppost on the center island and another container van in the opposite lane.
The lamppost fell and hit Robert Borlasa, a resident of Sitio Kalubian in Barangay Yati, Liloan, who was waiting for traffic signal to turn green.
Borlasa was rushed to the Mandae City District Hospital, where he died.
Potayre was brought to the Mandaue City Police Office-Traffic Management Unit and was detained pending the filing of charges against him.
