ABELLA GETS NLRC POST, TO RESIGN AS COUNCILOR
Nendell Hanz Abella, who is a two-term councilor in the city’s south district, will represent the workers’ sector If Abella’s resignation pushes through, BOPK will have 8 councilors, which is equal to the allied councilors of Team Rama
Cebu City Councilor Nendell Hanz Abella will resign from his current position in the City Government to assume office as commissioner in the 7th Division of the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) under the Department of Labor and Employment 7.
Abella, who is a two-term councilor in the city’s south district, will represent the workers’ sector.
His resignation may affect the standing of the majority bloc in the City Council.
In an interview with SunStar Cebu, Abella said he has yet to receive the official communication of his appointment.
However, Abella said that he is ready to resign once he gets a copy of his appointment order.
“I will have to resign as a coun- cilor. As soon as I will receive the official notice of my appointment, I will have to tender my resignation,” he told SunStar Cebu.
Abella said that he applied for the NLRC position last March, after he learned that it was declared vacant.
Asked why he will choose it over his seat in the City Council, Abella said that his new task will allow him to serve more people.
“I used to work in NLRC 5th Division in Cagayan de Oro. Most of my cases are labor. Being a representative of the workers’ sector, I can very well serve the public not only in the City of Cebu but in the entire Visayas,” he added.
Abella said that he already informed Mayor Tomas Osmeña about his appointment, after he received the call from Presidential Management Staff Undersecretary Anderson Lo, who informed the councilor that he has been considered as one of the candidates for the position.
The councilor, however, refused to disclose further details on his talk with the mayor.
In a text message, Osmeña said he is sad because Abella is a loss to the City.
Abella is serving as chairperson for the three committees in the council. These committees are education, budget and finance, and environment.
He is also a member of Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK), the majority bloc in the council.
If Abella’s resignation pushes through, BOPK will have eight councilors, which is equal to the number of councilors under Team Rama. /
