ABELLA GETS NLRC POST, TO RE­SIGN AS COUN­CILOR

Cebu City Coun­cilor Nen­dell Hanz Abella will re­sign from his cur­rent po­si­tion in the City Gov­ern­ment to as­sume of­fice as com­mis­sioner in the 7th Di­vi­sion of the Na­tional La­bor Re­la­tions Com­mis­sion (NLRC) un­der the Depart­ment of La­bor and Em­ploy­ment 7.

Abella, who is a two-term coun­cilor in the city’s south district, will rep­re­sent the work­ers’ sec­tor.

His res­ig­na­tion may af­fect the stand­ing of the ma­jor­ity bloc in the City Coun­cil.

In an in­ter­view with Sun­Star Cebu, Abella said he has yet to re­ceive the of­fi­cial com­mu­ni­ca­tion of his ap­point­ment.

How­ever, Abella said that he is ready to re­sign once he gets a copy of his ap­point­ment or­der.

“I will have to re­sign as a coun- cilor. As soon as I will re­ceive the of­fi­cial no­tice of my ap­point­ment, I will have to ten­der my res­ig­na­tion,” he told Sun­Star Cebu.

Abella said that he ap­plied for the NLRC po­si­tion last March, af­ter he learned that it was de­clared va­cant.

Asked why he will choose it over his seat in the City Coun­cil, Abella said that his new task will al­low him to serve more peo­ple.

“I used to work in NLRC 5th Di­vi­sion in Ca­gayan de Oro. Most of my cases are la­bor. Be­ing a rep­re­sen­ta­tive of the work­ers’ sec­tor, I can very well serve the pub­lic not only in the City of Cebu but in the en­tire Visayas,” he added.

Abella said that he al­ready in­formed Mayor Tomas Os­meña about his ap­point­ment, af­ter he re­ceived the call from Pres­i­den­tial Man­age­ment Staff Un­der­sec­re­tary An­der­son Lo, who in­formed the coun­cilor that he has been con­sid­ered as one of the can­di­dates for the po­si­tion.

The coun­cilor, how­ever, re­fused to dis­close fur­ther de­tails on his talk with the mayor.

In a text mes­sage, Os­meña said he is sad be­cause Abella is a loss to the City.

Abella is serv­ing as chair­per­son for the three com­mit­tees in the coun­cil. These com­mit­tees are ed­u­ca­tion, bud­get and fi­nance, and en­vi­ron­ment.

He is also a mem­ber of Bando Os­meña Pun­dok Kauswa­gan (BOPK), the ma­jor­ity bloc in the coun­cil.

If Abella’s res­ig­na­tion pushes through, BOPK will have eight coun­cilors, which is equal to the num­ber of coun­cilors un­der Team Rama. /
