Five hurt in grenade blast

people, including two barangay hall personnel, were hurt after a grenade exploded near a supermarke­t in Barangay Lamanan in Calinan District, Davao City yesterday afternoon.

Witnesses claimed two unidentifi­ed men on board a motorcycle lobbed the grenade inside a multicab where Barangay Lamanan chieftain Nicanor Pepito along with his staff were on board. They were headed to the downtown area when the incident happened.

Pepito immediatel­y picked up the grenade and threw it outside and exploded near a supermarke­t.

Davao City Police Office (DCPO) spokespers­on Sr. Insp. Catherine dela Rey, in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao yesterday afternoon, said two of the five victims are staff of the Barangay Lamanan chieftain Nicanor Pepito, while the three others are just bystanders.

Victims were identified as Antonio Felix Jarantilla, a barangay police, 35; Argie Seniel Balele, 29, a barangay treasurer; Jose Martel Entero, 44; and Jayson Ambon Agiw, 20, both residents of Tugbok; and Juveto Cozeiriano, 30, from Toril.

"Pinulot ni kapitan yung granada at tinapon malapit sa isang supermarke­t bago pa ito sumabog. Tinamaan yung mga kasama niya dahil tumalon kaagad sila galing sa multicab pagkakita nila na tinapunan sila ng granada," dela Rey said.

Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte-Carpio, meanwhile, has ordered DCPO director Sr. Supt. Michael John Dubria to conduct an investigat­ion regarding grenade blast incident in Calinan.

Carpio, in a statement, said rest assured the police is on top of the isolated incident.

She also reassured everybody that there is no reason to panic about the security in Davao City.

"This is purely isolated," Carpio said. ICT

Calinan police have yet to determine the motive behind the incident.

She added that they are now conducting follow-up investigat­ion to identify and locate the whereabout­s of the suspects who are behind the incident.

All five victims were brought to Brokenshir­e Hospital for treatment, dela Rey said, adding that the victims are now under observatio­n. ICT
