Beauty in simplicity

-

MALACAÑANG recently announced that this year's commemoration of the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution will be simple and quiet.

“[Edsa anniversary] is going to be very simple, very quiet. And the theme will be about the reflection on nation building,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.

However, this did not sit well with some people saying that a simple and quiet commeration shows that the current administration is giving little importance to the historical event.

Well, commemorations or celebrations need not have to be grand even as simplicity does not always show lack of interest. The beauty of having a simple celebration or commemoration, in this case, will highlight the true meaning of the event itself.

If executed beautifully, a simple commemoration of the 1986 Edsa People Power Revolution may allow us to truly reflect on what former president Corazon C. Aquino and other Filipinos fought for during the Martial Law Era.

The People Power is also the picture of a peaceful movement against the dark days of Marcos regime, hence, it would also be fitting for Filipinos to have a simple and quiet commemoration of the historic event.

Sometimes celebrations or commemorations are so grand that people forget what truly is being celebrated or commemorated. Yes, it does highlight certain things in a way but it does not always remind us of the legacy of a certain person or event. In this case, the 1986 Edsa People Power revolution.
