ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR QUALITY EDUCATION
TIMOTY JHON C. DEL ROSARIO
In the 21st Century setting amid the continuously evolving challenges of delivering quality education particularly in public schools, there is the call to revisit key elements essential to attaining the highest standards in the learning process.
Foremost of these elements is the teacher, who is perhaps the most important factor in the quality of education. He or she must be a trained teacher who uses teaching methods that permit the pupils to participate actively, with teaching methods that even out the different starting points of the students, including gender. The teacher must have access to the teaching material needed to satisfy the requirements of the curriculum to deliver quality education.
Another key element is educational content where the curriculum and the teaching material must be relevant emphasizing basic literacy and numeracy skills sufficiently and highlighting basic skills such as hygiene, nutrition, knowledge about HIV/ AIDS, conflict work, gender equality, climate change or other important national and international issues needed by the students in the learning process.
In addition, the learning environment must be healthy, secure, protective, inspiring and adapted for both girls and boys. Whenever possible, there should be an inclusive learning environment also for minorities or pupils with disabilities plus a conducive setting where the pupils learn to respect each other and the surrounding natural environment.
Finally, a similarly key element to attain quality education is unity in the school where teachers cooperate to ensure a sound learning environment, parents and the surrounding community participate in ensuring that the school is a welcoming place to be.
