Blu Girls end cam­paign in dis­ap­point­ment

The Philip­pine Blu Girls sur­ren­dered seven runs in the fifth and suf­fered an 11-5 loss to Puerto Rico in six in­nings Sun­day in the Canada Cup In­ter­na­tional Soft­ball Cham­pi­onship in Sur­rey, Bri­tish Columbia.

The Blu Girls led 4-3 en­ter­ing the bot­tom half of the fifth when the Puerto Rico’s bats came alive to end an up-and-down cam­paign in the city lo­cated 40 kilo­me­ters from Van­cou­ver.

Carsyn Gor­don be­gan the Puerto Ri­can out­burst with a two-run sin­gle, reached sec­ond be­fore ad­vanc­ing home on a sin­gle by Ya­he­lis Car­dona. Mon­ica San­tos in­flicted more dam­age for the Filipinos when she hit a three-run sin­gle to make it 10-4.

Marta Fuentes com­pleted the binge when she tripled to score San­tos from first.

It was a bit­ter set­back for the Blu Girls, who came back from a 3-1 deficit to take the lead on a three-run homer by Dani Gil­more in the fourth in­ning, only to fal­ter in the next in­ning.

The Blu Girls be­gan the tour­na­ment with three straight vic­to­ries, in­clud­ing stun­ning wins over host Canada and Tai­wan.

They would lose their next three games, in­clud­ing one against the same Puerto Ri­can squad but kept their ti­tle hopes alive when they beat Canada anew, 6-3, Satur­day.
