NU, Ateneo near semis
champion National University and Ateneo moved closer to advancing to the men’s Final Four after easily beating their respective foes yesterday in the UAAP Season 80 badminton tournament.
The Bulldogs blanked the Adamson Falcons, 5-0, while the Blue Eagles hacked out a 4-1 decision over University of the East.
NU and Ateneo improved to 3-0, and the two teams will dispute the first semifinals berth at 8 a.m. today at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
University of the Philippines nipped University of Santo Tomas, 3-2, in the other tie to join De La Salle in third place at 2-1.
The Bulldogs’ Alvin Morada defeated Kevin Fabros, 21-9, 21-18, Keeyan Gabuelo bested Johnrick Macabenta, 23-25, 21-9, and Mike Minuluan turned back Marf Concha to sweep the singles matches.
Completing the shutout win are NU’s doubles pairs of Minuluan and Christian Cuyno, a 21-14, 21-11 winner over Concha and Joshua Antonio, and Morada and Alem Palmares, who toppled Fabros and Macabenta, 21-16, 21-19.
The Eagles’ drew victories from Carlo Remo, who tripped Joseph Manlalangit, 21-10, 2110, in the first singles, and Clarence Filart, who downed Benjamin Silva, 21-8, 21-10, in the second singles.
