Oh, my mama!

The Freeman - - OPINION - Erwin Roceles

Today’s readings on widows inspired me to honor one such special woman — my mom. Mom decided to retire after spending some 20 years in the same company. But when Dad died unexpectedly, leaving Mom and us four teenagers behind, she had no choice but to join again the workforce. I’m sure it was tough on her, and admittedly, there were also many instances when we made it doubly hard for her. But through it all, she worked tirelessly to provide for our needs. She only retired when all four of us started having our own families.

Her selfless spirit has endeared her not only to our family but to her friends as well. It’s heartwarming to see the love and affection Mom’s friends have for her.

Her deep love for my dad is most evident when she glowingly speaks of him to all her grandchildren. She has even published a book in his honor.

But it is her unwavering faith in God that has been most infectious. And I truly believe that our jar of flour and jug of oil continue to be full because of this.
