Rebels violate international law
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Human Rights Watch has said that the communist rebel group New People’s Army violated the international humanitarian law for the killing of a Philippine town mayor and his son in the restive region of Mindanao.
The rebels seized Dario Otaza, 53, mayor of Loreto town in Agusan del Sur province, and his son Daryl, 27, and executed them on October 19.
In a statement on October 25, the NPA took responsibility for the twin killings – calling their execution “revolutionary justice.” NPA fighters, posing as agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), raided the Otaza home in nearby Butuan City and eventually killing them. Authorities found the bodies of the two men the next day with multiple gunshot wounds.
