Cebu mayor loses control over cops
CEBU – The National Police Commission has stripped the police power of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña after the politician recalled dozens of firearms and patrol vehicles he provided the local police force as support to law enforcement operations.
The mayor also announced he was cutting off the allowance of policemen after complaining that the Philippine National Police had replaced Cebu police chief Senior Superintendent Benjamin Santos without informing him or prior consultation.
Osmeña felt insulted by the action of the PNP in replacing Santos. Local government executives may select their police chief under the Local Government Code. The police commission issued the en banc resolution withdrawing the mayor’s deputation.
Deputy Ombudsman for Visayas, Paul Elmer Clemente and Acting Assistant Ombudsman Carla Juris Tanco lead the ribbon-cutting ceremony and blessing of the new offices for the Gender Help Desk, Public Assistance and Complaint Desk and Clearance Section.
