A record high of nearly two million Filipinos abroad are expected to participate in next year’s elections.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Luie Guia said the number of registered overseas absentee voters (OAVs) for the 2019 polls is expected to reach 1.9 million.

“At the current rate of overseas voter registration, we are confident that by the end of the registration period, there will be around 1.9 million overseas voters for the 2019 national elections,” Guia said.

Based on latest count of the Comelec, the number of overseas absentee voters already reached 1,600,746.

The figure, he said, exceeded the target of 1,376,067 for the 2016 presidential elections.

He called on all Filipinos abroad who are qualified to vote to register as OAVs before the Sept. 30 deadline.

Filipinos staying abroad from April 17 to May 13, 2019 who want to participate in the 2019 polls can register as OAV.

Comelec said qualified to register are those at least 18 years old and has not been disqualified by law from voting.

Applications may be filed at the nearest Philippine Foreign Service Post abroad, including the three Manila Economic and Cultural Offices (MECO) in Taiwan.
