2 die of heat stroke in Manila

Two per­sons were found dead, ap­par­ently due to heat stroke, in Manila over the past two days, po­lice said yes­ter­day.

The de­com­pos­ing body of su­per­mar­ket em­ployee Ben­jamin Gazz­inga, 34, was found by his brother in his house on Ba­gac street in Tondo at around 3:30 p.m. Wed­nes­day.

Po­lice said Gazz­inga was last seen alive on Sun­day and it was only the foul odor com­ing from his room that made his brother think some­thing was amiss.

Mean­while, 28-year-old Jonel Morta, a stay-in helper at Lan Zhou La Mien restau­rant on San Fer­nando street, Bi­nondo, was found dead in his room be­fore dawn yes­ter­day.

Morta com­plained about a nag­ging pain in his lower ex­trem­i­ties when he fin­ished his shift at around 11:15 p.m. Wed­nes­day, ac­cord­ing to Po­lice Of­fi­cer 3 Ryan Jay Balag­tas, homi­cide in­ves­ti­ga­tor.

Morta went to sleep in the room he shared with his cousin Crisanto, lo­cated on the fourth of the build­ing hous­ing the restau­rant.

At around 3 a.m. yes­ter­day, Crisanto tried to wake Morta but found he was al­ready dead.

Pend­ing au­topsy re­sults, po­lice in­ves­ti­ga­tors said the two vic­tims may have died of heat stroke.
