HERE WE ARE NOW
No Chaos No Party, a project by Spanish-Filipino artist Valeria Cavestany and edited by Malaysian curator-writer Eva McGovern-Basa, is a 218-page book that attempts to articulate the magnificent, artful mess that is Metro Manila. Through the very distinct perspectives of 28 contemporary artists who work and live in the city, it navigates through a wide collection of glimpses into this urban setting’s familiar landscapes and its curious nooks.
Taking a multi-angled and multi-generational method, readers get a peek into the personal worlds of visual artists. Their diverse explorations of media, imageries, styles, and histories lay ground for a reintroduction of Manila’s intricate chaos, with its terrains of the peculiar and mundane, the intimate and the communal, the noise and the quiet, the barren and the lush. An exposition of artworks, interviews, and personal archives are used to map these conversations with the metropolis: a love-hate relationship that breeds both enthusiasm and reluctance.
The book is a celebration of art, the city, and how continuously and tirelessly they fuel each other. Despite the seeming futility in defining the capital, this compilation of oral histories reveals splendor in the madness. Its overwhelming, disorderly, and confused facets are used as starting points, leading to a semblance of cartography that is uniquely Metro Manila’s.
The publication captures the territory along with its contradictions through a collaboration with Inksurge, the graphic design studio of Rex Advincula and Joyce Tai, and their uniquely experimental approach.
