GUY Friends

Town & Country (Philippines) - - EDITOR’S LETTER - YVETTE.FERNANDEZ @SUMMITMEDIA.coM.PH

I’ve always had close male friends. I think it’s because I went to co-ed schools all my life. Guy friends. Girl friends. It didn’t matter when we were younger. The cool thing about having guy friends is that they helped us carry our overstuffed schoolbags, they battled the throngs to get us food at the school canteen, they drove us around even before they had driver’s licenses.

When I got older it became more complicated. Because when my guy friends got girlfriends, some of the women were not very secure, and they pushed us away. Fortunately the more confident girlfriends, and later wives, happily welcomed us as friends, and these friendships have only gotten stronger over the years.

One of my dearest guy friends, Rich Grau, moved home from New York last year after 30 years away. He was truly my boy next door for many years, since our Manhattan studio apartments shared a wall. He brought me his catch after fishing trips, got me soup and cold medicine when I was sick, rescued me from a number of bad dates. He sleepily picked up my frantic phone call at 3 a.m. and came over to dispose of a mouse. Yes, ladies, he is still single. Welcome to our Bachelor Issue. It’s one our mostly female team looks forward to every year. We were so excited about this year’s issue that we photographed Marlon Stockinger, our cover subject, way back in January because we weren’t sure where in the world he would be later on in the year. We enjoyed spending that morning with him.

For this year’s bachelor list, instead of a separate local feature, we have just one global list. Quite an impressive (and a very handsome) lineup we have, as always. I am fortunate to say I know most of our local bachelors, or, horror of horrors, their mothers, (e.g. former T&C cover Sofia Elizalde, mother of Patxi), and we are very proud to have them on our list. Some of them are repeats from years past because, fortunately for the women of Manila, they still are very single.

A shoutout to one of our previous bachelors, Jacques Christophe Branellec, who is getting married this month to his gorgeous fiancée Mia Arcenas. One more to cross off our list. Wishing them both all the best!

Cheers!
