Important scenes from Philippine history as depicted by National Artist Vicente Manansala and famed muralist Amadeo Manalad are on view at the Ayala Museum this month. The 70 pieces in “Manansala & Manalad: Framing History” were originally commissioned 70 years ago by Don Ramon Roces, publisher of the Evening News, and were meant to inspire and reinvigorate the Filipino people after the horrors of World War II. Appearing in serial form in 1947, the drawings were accompanied by short texts by anthropologist Henry Otley Beyer and statesman and historical researcher Jaime C. de Veyra; later that year, the drawings were compiled for the book Philippine Saga: A Pictorial History of the Archipelago

Since Time Began. For this exhibition, the drawings are displayed alongside related photographs of the Ayala Museum’s history dioramas as well as select works by contemporary artists Roberto Feleo, Leo Abaya, Christina Quisumbing Ramilo, Kiri Dalena, and Nikki Luna. This interesting look into our nation’s history is further heightened with the accompanying audio guide entitled “Philippine History: A Time Travel Experience” and the “Framing History Film Festival” with film screenings on August 5 and 12. Presented by the Ayala Museum in partnership with the Assisi Development Foundation, the show is curated by Imelda Cajipe Endaya, Manuel Quezon III, and Mia Fernando-Cameron, and produced by Pinky Camara-Roxas.
