GMA‑7’s creative geniuses Dominic Zapata (left) and Don Michael Perez talked about their passion project,

Mulawin vs. Ravena, during the fantaserye’s grand press conference last May 15 at the Hive Hotel & Convention Place in Barangay South Triangle, Quezon City. Dominic—who directed the original

Mulawin in 2004 and is co‑directing its 2017 sequel with Don Michael, the show’s creator—spoke of the series and paid tribute to his co‑director during the presscon.

In his speech before the press, Direk Dominic said:

“First of all, it’s not a remake, it’s a sequel… Sasabihin nila, ‘A, bakit di ka nakaisip ng bagong show?’ Alam n’yo, sa totoo lang, mas madaling gumawa ng bagong show… Mas mahirap gumawa ng sequel na maghi‑hit. Alam ’yan sa pelikula, alam ’yan sa TV.

“E, bakit pa rin namin ginawa? Because I think Don Michael Perez has created… Kung merong generation noon na gumawa ng Darna, ’yong generation natin, masasabi natin na nakagawa ng dalawa—ang Encantadia ’tsaka Mulawin. We owe it to that franchise na ipagpatuloy natin ’yon para hindi siya nakakalimutan… Hindi dahil nagyayabang si Direk Don, he really just has a story to tell.”

Writer‑director Don Michael, for his part, said that doing the Mulawin sequel is a dream come true for him:

“Twelve years ago, when Direk Dominic and I were still starting out, he was already a director and I was a writer… While we were doing Mulawin,

alam namin na we were doing something important but we didn’t think that it was going to be this major.

“So we worked on this project for about two years. 2004, lumabas ’yong unang Mulawin series, and then

we did the movie noong 2005. Doon sa dalawang taon na ’yon, ’yon ang naging buhay namin. After that, kahit nagpapahinga ’yong Mulawin, hindi siya natulog in our heads… In fact, napapanaginipan ko siya nang madalas. So, honestly, this sequel is a dream come true for me.”
