Liza Soberano is Darna!

YES! (Philippines) - - Cover Story -

Atthe time of our interview with Liza Soberano, she can’t help feeling happy and excited at the same time because of the fans’ clamor for her to play the title role in the upcoming Erik Matti-helmed Darna movie, which will be produced by Star Cinema. She also expresses surprise over the revelation made by Ricky Lo in his May 23 “Funfare” column for the

Philippine Star. Quoting his “Very Deep Penetration Agent/VDPA,” the veteran entertainment columnist wrote that “the final… and perfect!... choice as the new Darna is Liza Soberano.” “Nagulat nga ako,” Liza tells YES! “Wala po akong direct word na galing sa management na sinabi na ako na talaga. But I’m really, really happy if it’s for me, and I’ll accept it, pero wala pa talaga.”

Three days after our interview with Liza, ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol news program comes out with a report confirming that she is indeed the new Darna.

In the telecast, as reported by PEP. ph, Liza herself finally puts an end to all speculations. Speaking to reporter MJ Felipe, she says: “Yes, it’s confirmed!

Tinatanggap ko na po ang role na Darna!” With this development, Liza joins the short list of actresses who have essayed the role of the iconic Pinay superheroine, one of the most popular and enduring characters created by Pinoy komiks king Mars Ravelo. Among the stars who have played Darna in the past are Angel Locsin, Nanette Medved, Anjanette Abayari, Gina Pareño, Rio Locsin, Liza Moreno, and Vilma Santos. The last time Pinoys saw Darna was in 2009, when Marian Rivera breathed life into the fictional character.

A day after the big reveal about Liza as Darna, the young actress receives another surprise. Angel Locsin, who played the superheroine in 2005 on GMA-7, gives Liza a set of Darna

komiks. It will be recalled that Angel was reportedly the choice of Erik Matti to topbill the Star Cinema movie, but due to health reasons, she had to back out.

In the Facebook account of her manager, Ogie Diaz, Liza has expressed her gratefulness to Angel for the rare gifts: “Di pa po kami uli nagkikita. Pero pag nakita ko po siya, I will thank her po for the opportunity and these Darna komiks.”

Ogie goes on to say that Angel’s gesture can only mean one thing: “Yang mga magazines na yan, bigay sa kanya ni Angel Locsin. Ibig sabihin, gusto ni Angel si Liza gumanap na Darna.”

As for the 19-year-old actress, the Darna role is both a blessing and a challenge, which she’ll gladly take on any day. As she puts it in her TV Patrol interview: “When they offered the role to me, gusto ko po talaga. I feel like it will help me career-wise, and also I’m hoping that as an actor, mas marami pa akong matutunan.” In the course of the newscast, the new Darna also says: “Sobrang na-excite po ako, saka siyempre, happy. I feel really honored to be able to don the iconic costume and to be able to embody what Darna represents. Medyo nervous po, siyempre. ’Yong expectations ng mga tao. Ang gagawin ko na lang po, give my 100… more than 100 percent best sa project na ito.”•
