TBA STUDIOS: Beyond HENERAL LUNA
Tba Studios is the merging of three movie outfits—tuko Film Productions, buchi boy entertainment, and Artikulo Uno Productions—after the huge success of its first joint venture, the 2015 historical film Heneral Luna, about national hero Antonio Luna. It went on to bankroll some of the outstanding movies of 2016: Women of the Weeping River (best picture at Gawad Urian and the Qcinema film festival), Sunday Beauty Queen (best picture at the Metro Manila Film Festival), and 1-2-3 (opening film at the 2016 cinemalaya Independent Film Festival). So far this year, Tba Studios has come up with the quirky romance I’m Drunk, I Love You, the psychosexual thriller Bliss, and the morality tale Birdshot, which won the critics’ choice award at the recently concluded Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino. Next in line for the film company are the movie adaptation of F.H. batacan’s crime drama Smaller and Smaller Circles, and a Heneral Luna sequel— Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, about national hero Gregorio del Pilar.

TBA Studios’ big bosses—(L-R) Vincent Nebrida, president; E.A. Rocha and Fernando Ortigas, executive producers—led the formal launch of their film production company. “To all who share our passion, to all our supporters in the press, in the media, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you,” Rocha said, adding: “Nando will say the last word here.” And his business partner exclaimed: “Cheers!”
Event guests included (L-R) Cherie Gil; JC Santos; married couple and fellow actors Shamaine Centenera and Nonie Buencamino; director Quark Henares; and Bembol Roco. Cherie has a surprise participation in a TBA Studios project, still unnamed at this writing. JC plays a major role in 1-2-3. Shamaine is part of Bliss, and Nonie is in the cast of both Goyo and Smaller and Smaller Circles. Quark works for another company, Globe Studios, which has partnered with TBA Studios in productions such as Birdshot and The Mythology Class. Bembol is in the cast of Smaller and Smaller Circles.
With Direk Jerrold are some of his actors in Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral: (L-R) Rafa Siguion-Reyna, Stephanie Sol, Empress Schuck, Robert Seña, and Nonie Buencamino.
Nonie couldn’t hide his surprise when he was called onstage by Direk Jerrold. It was only then that the actor learned that he’s part of the Goyo movie, where he will reprise his Heneral Luna role, as Felipe Buencamino, who was among those who betrayed the fallen hero. The actor, incidentally, is a descendant of Felipe.
“I’m glad to know that I’m part of it,” Nonie said, grinning.
“We’d just like to announce that [the film version of] Arnold Arre’s awesome graphic novel, The Mythology Class, is in development, and I’ll be directing it,” Jerrold Tarog (left) told the audience. Standing beside Direk Jerrold onstage is comic-book writer and illustrator Arnold Arre.
