Empoy’s bedroom is fit for a bachelor, with only the bare necessities: a sofa bed, a flat-screen TV, a split-type air-con, and a small bathroom. One section of the closet contains, not clothes, but Empoy’s collection of toys and action figures. Framed posters of Empoy’s movies are propped on the floor. Natural light floods the room via glass sliding doors, which can be covered with roller shades when Empoy wants privacy.
Small stools and an accent chair provide seating for his friends, who frequent his room whenever Empoy is here. “Doon kasi ako nag-i-stay madalas sa bahay ng mommy ko pag umuuwi ako dito sa Baliuag,” he says. “Pag magpapalaba ng brip.”
A big mountain bike (or MTB) is parked on one side of the room. Empoy picked up the biking hobby in 2015, but he says he hasn’t biked recently because of his busy schedule. He and his friends have biked the trails in Starbaks Café and Tukod, both in San Rafael, Bulacan, and the Candaba Wetlands Bird Sanctuary in Candaba, Pampanga.
These days, the self-confessed adventure boy is more into hiking than biking. “Umaakyat kami lagi,” he says. With fellow hikers, he has climbed Mount Pulag, Mount Manalmon, and most recently the Tarak Ridge in Mariveles, Bataan. The mountain’s peak, according to the pinoymountaineer.com website, is 1,130 meters above sea level.
