When erika Padilla found out last February that she was pregnant, the actress/event host/courtside reporter/ yoga teacher/businesswoman was caught off guard.

“I’m mildly polycystic, so I have to regularly take the pill,” she told YeS! at the baby shower organized by the stroller brand Aprica Philippines. She was referring to the polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition in which women experience irregular menstrual periods.

erika recalled going to the hospital for a checkup on what she thought was excessive stomach gas. but she ended up taking the pregnancy test, as it was mandatory for female patients, and the result showed she was five weeks in the family way.

Last September 7, she gave birth to her first child with Jeffrey cariaso, an ex-player in the Philippine basketball Association (PbA), who’s now the assistant coach of the Alaska Aces team in the PbA. the couple tied the knot in a civil wedding in the U.S. on June 20, 2017, and they will have a church wedding on July 22, 2018.

erika and Jeffrey have chosen to give their panganay— a boy—the nickname Jet because Jeffrey went by the monicker “the Jet” when he was still playing in the PbA.

“Ang hope ko is that I really become a better person, a bigger person for my child and my husband,” erika said. “’Yong mas maging responsable pa akong tao.”

Bea Alonzo (left) joined in the parlor game that had the participants guessing the size of Erika’s waistline. The Kapamilya star became friends with the first-time mom when they worked together in A Beautiful Affair, the 2012 teleserye in which Bea shared top billing with her perennial love-team partner John Lloyd Cruz. The two actresses reunited this year in another teleserye, A Love to Last, which had Ian Veneracion as Bea’s leading man. A Love to Last ended its eight-month run last September 22.

Flanking Jeffrey and Erika are Jeffrey’s children from his past marriage—King, 11 years old (left), and Aya Cariaso, 17. The 30-year-old actress is simply Erika to her stepchildren. “Hindi Tita, kasi fourteen years lang ’yong agwat namin no’ng panganay,” she explained. There’s also a 14-year age gap between Erika and husband Jeffrey.

“When Jeff and I got together, four years na after his separation [from his first wife]. So, okey naman lahat. I see myself as a friend to them.”

The baby shower’s theme was inspired by the Baby Greyson Jet’s nickname, Jet. That’s why an image of a jet aircraft adorned these party treats: (L-R) cake by Swell Sweets Cake Lab, ceramic mugs by Instamug, and throw pillows, also by Instamug.
