In 2011, the ABS-CBN Film Restoration Project was set up for the archiving and restoring of movies produced by the Kapamilya network’s filmproduction arm, Star Cinema. It has now digitally restored and remastered more than 150 titles, including a few made by other movie outfits.

The latest entry to that list is May Minamahal, a romantic tale told with a dash of comedy and drama by writer-director Jose Javier Reyes. It was released in 1993, the year Star Cinema was established, as an entry in the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 25 seasons ago.

May Minamahal was the third movie ever produced by Star Cinema after the action flick Adan Ronquillo (starring Bong Revilla and coproduced with Lily Monteverde’s Regal Films) and the big-screen adaptation of the sitcom Home Along Da Riles (starring Dolphy).

“Although tapos na rin kami sa Adan Ronquillo ’tsaka sa Home Along Da Riles, this is the movie that everybody remembers, e,” ABS-CBN Film Restoration head Leo Katigbak told YES! Magazine to explain why May Minamahal was honored with a red-carpet screening as a highlight of this year’s edition of REELive the Classics, an annual festival of ABS-CBN Film Restoration’s works.

Indeed, those who have seen the movie either in cinemas or on cable TV will never forget how star-crossed lovers Carlitos (Aga Muhlach) and Monica (Aiko Melendez) are able to overcome their differences in social, economic, and familial backgrounds to happily end up in each other’s arms.

Plus, Aga and Aiko also fell in love with each other while making this movie.

ABS-CBN artists who turned up at the event included (L-R): Sylvia Sanchez of the daytime soap Hanggang Saan; Sylvia’s daughter Ria Atayde and Joseph Marco of the recently concluded hit teleserye Wildflower; Mon Confiado of the Star Cinema horror flick The Ghost Bride; Alex Medina of the primetime drama series The Good Son; and Luis Alandy, who had a special participation in the teledrama Asintado, and his wife Joselle.

The people behind the success of May Minamahal included (L-R) director Jose Javier “Joey” Reyes and lead stars Aiko Melendez and Aga Muhlach. Direk Joey takes pride in the fact that their movie was the first romcom made by Star Cinema, and it has...

ABS-CBN Film Restoration head Leo Katigbak gave a short speech just before the screening. “Ang isang ikinatatakot namin for the longest time is hindi mare-restore itong pelikulang ’to,” he said. “Kasi no’ng nag-uumpisa ang Star Cinema, ang ’binibigay...

Leo Katigbak (leftmost) posed for a posterity shot with some members of the cast and the production staff of May Minamahal: (L-R) Nikka Valencia, Bimbo Bautista, Ogie Diaz, JoAnn Bañaga, Aiko Melendez, Jose Javier Reyes, Aga Muhlach, Boots Anson-Roa,...
