Simple or elaborate, the Algarvian chimneys are a symbol of this region, heritage of the Arab presence for centuries. In addition to their practical use, chimneys were decorative elements of houses. The day-to-day chimney was used to prepare meals, while an ornamental chimney had a prominent place in the kitchens, place for the hosts to receive their guests. A chimney was a sign of life and activity inside of the houses.
