Portugal is a world golf destination, but is still waiting for more portuguese players to achieve international success, to be role models for the youngest and to attract more players. We have all the necessary ingredients – courses, climate, thousands of foreigners choosing Portugal to play – but we are at the back of the pack in terms of European players. Officially the country has 14.090 amateur players. It has 86 golf courses, with 10 in the North and some 35 in the Algarve. Every year some 1,5 million rounds of golf are played, with 1,2 million in the south. In the world of economics and business the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere are considered two different worlds. In Portugal the North and the South are also different, especially in matters concerning golf. And going by the present record, young professionals that can be examples of the development of golf in Portugal will appear in the south, if meanwhile new support appears – sponsors and more competition. Without it, it will all remain the same. I.e., good enough for internal play only. Of the ten top players in the amateur ranking, half aim at giving priority to their studies, even if some may later return to golf, as managers, and the other half wants to turn professional, either on tour or teaching. While in the north region most high performance youths stop golf to pursue their studies, in the south most interrupt their studies to improve in golf. The ones in the north permanently leave high performance golf, while the ones in the south advance until their finances run out, needing support to continue, especially on the professional route. “There are no conditions to do this due to lack of a sports culture. Portugal é um destino mundial de golfe, mas continua à espera que surjam mais jogadores com sucesso internacional, para sensibilizar os mais novos e angariar mais praticantes. Temos todos os melhores ingredientes – campos, clima, milhares de estrangeiros a escolher Portugal para jogar – mas estamos no fundo da Europa em número de praticantes. No mundo da economia e dos negócios o Hemisfério Norte e o Hemisfério Sul são considerados dois mundos diferentes. Em Portugal o norte e o sul são também diferentes, sobretudo no que se refere ao golfe. E pelo histórico até agora registado, os jovens profissionais que podem servir de exemplo no desenvolvimento em Portugal surgirão a sul, se entretanto houver mais apoios – patrocinadores e mais competição. Sem isto vai continuar tudo na mesma. Ou seja, bom apenas para consumo interno. Dos dez primeiros do ranking amador, metade pretende dar prioridade aos estudos, mesmo que alguns possam regressar depois ao golfe, como gestores, e outra metade quer optar logo pela via profissional, de competição ou ensino. Enquanto na região norte a maioria dos jovens de alta competição suspende o golfe para prosseguir os estudos, no sul a maioria interrompe os estudos para evoluir no golfe. Os primeiros deixam definitivamente a alta competição, os do sul avançam até onde lhes é possível financeiramente, precisando de apoios para continuar, sobretudo na via profissional. “Não estão reunidas as condições por falta de cultura desportiva. Noutros países há uma ligação entre as
