China has record trade sur­plus with US amid tar­iff spat

China’s ex­port trade growth ac­cel­er­ated in Septem­ber, sig­nalling that pro­duc­ers ex­pe­dited sales abroad to avoid fresh tar­iffs im­posed by the Trump ad­min­is­tra­tion. Ex­ports in dol­lar terms rose 14.5% in Septem­ber com­pared to the same pe­riod last year, the cus­toms ad­min­is­tra­tion said on Fri­day, de­fy­ing ex­pec­ta­tions for a slow­down to 8.2%. The sur­prise jump in ex­ports drove China’s trade sur­plus against the US to $34bn, a record high.
