Third round of Qatar Baja today
Ten drivers will battle it out for top honours in the third round of the Qatar Manateq Baja series today. The championship, organised by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF), will traverse through the desert terrain of Sealine and Khor Al Udaid, which will consist of a number of marked courses.
Yesterday, the administrative checks were carried out at the QMMF headquarters, followed by scrutineering after which 11 vehicles were cleared to participate in the T1, T2 and T3 categories. The ceremonial start will be held today at 8am, followed by the rally in challenging terrains. The prize distribution ceremony is scheduled at 6:30pm.
Qatar’s Sheikh Hamad al-Thani and Mohammed al-Meer are the front-runners for the title. The championship will resume after a gap of five months, with first two rounds of the series held in April. The six-leg series will have two rounds in November and December before coming to an end in January 2019.
It will be busy season at the QMMF as beehive of activities has been planned. The Manateq International Rally of Qatar, the finale to the 2018 FIA Middle East Rally Championship is the marquee event to look forward to and it will be held from November 15-17.
QMMF President Abdulrahman al-Mannai was excited for the start of new season and said a number of activities have been lined up ahead. “It’s going to be a busy season. Next month we will have the hugely popular Manateq Qatar International Rally. That will host the big names in motor racing. We will special activities during that week,” he said.
“We are looking forward to this week’s round. We are very excited at this point in time. We have planned a series of activities right throughout the season, like we always do. We shall give more details in the coming days,” al-Mannai said.
