Fraudster who posed as duke jailed for £1.7mn scam
A conman who once posed as the Duke of Malborough in a hotels scam has been jailed for seven years for swindling small firms out of £1.7mn. Alexander Wood, 36, used phone technology to trick victims into handing over private information, thinking they were speaking to their bank. Wood, of Camden, and accomplice Mohamed Azhar splashed out on Rolex watches with profits from the scam, Blackfriars crown court heard. One company laid off at least 13 staff due to the fraud, and another victim had a stroke after his firm was duped out of £1.2mn, the court was told. In 2015, Wood was jailed for three-and-a-half years over huge unpaid bills at five-star hotels.
