Re­flect­ing its con­tin­ued eco­nomic boom, and the forth­com­ing in­fra­struc­ture up­grade, Qatar has been ranked top in the Arab world as the best place to do business in the next five years, ac­cord­ing to the Eco­nomic In­tel­li­gence Unit (EIU).

Ac­cord­ing to the survey en­ti­tled “Business En­vi­ron­ment Rank­ings 2014”, Qatar ranked 21st in the global rank­ings for 2014-18 com­pared with 2009-2013, ahead of not only the Arab na­tions but also coun­tries such as the United King­dom, Rus­sia, Ja­pan, China and South Africa. In the Mid­dle East re­gion, only Is­rael is ranked higher, at 19th. Sin­ga­pore looks set to re­main the world's most in­vestor-friendly lo­ca­tion in 2014-18, re­tain­ing its rank dur­ing 2009-13. Switzer­land and Hong Kong also de­fend their re­spec­tive sec­ond and third place po­si­tions. In the GCC, ex­cept for Saudi Ara­bia, which im­proved its po­si­tion from 45 to 41, other mem­ber states such as the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait slid down. The survey did not cover Oman.
