QATAR TOPS GAZA-BOUND FOR­EIGN AID

At the Gaza Donor Con­fer­ence in Cairo, Qatar promised $1 bil­lion (QR3.64 bil­lion) in re­con­struc­tion aid for Gaza, mak­ing it the sin­gle largest do­na­tion to­wards the to­tal of $5.4 bil­lion (QR19.66 bil­lion) bound for the Gaza strip. The US pledged $212 mil­lion (QR772 mil­lion), the United Arab Emi­rates and Turkey both com­mit­ted $200 mil­lion (QR728 mil­lion), and the Euro­pean Union said its mem­ber states will col­lec­tively do­nate $568 mil­lion (QR2.68 bil­lion) apart from the UK's $32 mil­lion (QR116 mil­lion). While it was an­nounced that only half of this amount will be di­rected to re­con­struc­tion ac­tiv­i­ties, it is spec­u­lated the rest will be spent on bud­getary support, emer­gency re­lief op­er­a­tions, boost­ing eco­nomic ac­tiv­ity, etc. In the pic­ture, US Sec­re­tary of State John Kerry is seen greet­ing Qatari For­eign Min­is­ter Khaled al At­tiyah dur­ing the con­fer­ence.
