TACK­LING DIS­TRACTED DRIV­ING

Qatar Mo­bil­ity In­no­va­tions Cen­tre an­nounced the launch of Salamtek – a na­tional ini­tia­tive ded­i­cated to cre­at­ing in­no­va­tive so­lu­tions and ap­pli­ca­tions to re­duce dis­tracted driv­ing.

Driv­ers us­ing their mo­bile phones while driv­ing is one of the lead­ing causes of road ac­ci­dents in Qatar and glob­ally and the Salamtek ini­tia­tive aims at tack­ling the prob­lem by part­ner­ing with the Min­istry of Mu­nic­i­pal­ity and Ur­ban Plan­ning, Traf­fic Direc­torate of the Min­istry of In­te­rior, Oore­doo, Qatar In­surance Company and Road Safety Stud­ies Cen­tre of Qatar Univer­sity. One of the first of the ap­pli­ca­tions – Salamtek Per­sonal – is ex­pected to be made avail­able free of charge to An­droid users by the end of the year and “ma­jor en­hance­ments to in­crease user adop­tion through in­tro­duc­ing na­tional re­ward mech­a­nisms and gam­i­fi­ca­tion” is on the hori­zon, ac­cord­ing to a state­ment from the company.
