EMIR IN THE WHITE HOUSE

In his first of­fi­cial visit to the White House as the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Ha­mad Al Thani met with US Pres­i­dent Barack Obama to dis­cuss se­cu­rity con­cerns in the Mid­dle East. Obama told re­porters present that “Qatar is a strong part­ner in our coali­tion to de­grade and ul­ti­mately de­feat ISIL”. He con­curred with Qatar's long-stand­ing po­si­tion that Syria can only be sta­bilised af­ter Bashar Al As­sad steps down, an opin­ion that the Emir ex­pressed strongly in his op-ed piece for In the ar­ti­cle, he told the Amer­i­can public that hope­less­ness, and not Is­lam, was the cause of ter­ror­ism. “Bul­lets and bombs alone will not win the war on ter­ror,” he wrote, “Ad­dress­ing the root causes of ter­ror­ism will re­quire a deeper, longer-term, and more strate­gic ap­proach to the prob­lem.”
