HIGHLIGHTING A TABOO TOPIC
Taboo Yardies, film-maker Selena Blake’s documentary about Jamaican gays, debuted in Dublin, Ireland on August 5. Blake, who hails from St. Catherine parish in Jamaica, started work on the project in 2007. She says it has been a labour of love but well worth the sweat. “Six years ago when I started production on Taboo Yardies numerous folks whom I reached out to for interviews both in Jamaica and abroad rejected my request. Now they are willing and ready, that’s an indication that something has changed,” she said. Blake interviewed several prominent persons for the documentary, including former Jamaican prime minister Bruce Golding and gay activist and journalist Stacey-Ann Chin.
