Meet Ta­nia Isaac

Ta­nia Isaac is a dancer, chore­og­ra­pher and video artist. She will be part of the dance cast hon­our­ing Vir­ginia Alexan­der at the Saint Lu­cia Jazz & Arts Fes­ti­val’s Icons Se­ries on May 1st at the Na­tional Cul­tural Cen­tre. Ta­nia’s in­tro­duc­tion to dance be­gan in 1988 when she en­rolled as a mem­ber of the Les En­fants Dance Com­pany, un­der the di­rec­tion of Vir­ginia Alexan­der. She at­tended St. Joseph’s Con­vent and com­pleted ter­tiary level education in Saint Lu­cia at the Sir Arthur Lewis Com­mu­nity Col­lege in 1993. The fol­low­ing year, Ta­nia com­pleted the Alvin Al­ley Amer­i­can Dance Cen­tre Sum­mer Work­shop in New York, where she was trained in Mod­ern Dance and Bal­let. In 1997, Ta­nia re­ceived a Bach­e­lor’s De­gree in Dance from the Univer­sity of Wis­con­sin, where she grad­u­ated with hon­ours and a na­tional Dance As­so­ci­a­tion Out­stand­ing Grad­u­ate Award. In 2000, Ta­nia com­pleted a Mas­ter of Fine Arts De­gree in Dance at Tem­ple Univer­sity in Philadel­phia. Isaac fuses chore­og­ra­phy with per­sonal doc­u­men­tary high­light­ing so­cial com­men­tary that grap­ples with iden­tity, post-colo­nial is­sues, feminism and jux­ta­po­si­tions of Euro­pean and African in­flu­ences. Some of her ground­break­ing chore­og­ra­phy in­cludes 2009 land­scape on hold: (col­lab­o­ra­tion with Gabri Christa & Mar­i­anela Boan), Painted Bride Art Cen­tre, Philadel­phia, PA.
