Courts Presents Read­ing Champ with prizes

Hun­dreds of stu­dents in St. Lu­cia, be­tween the ages of eight and nine years old, will have par­tic­i­pated in the sixth an­nual Courts Schools Read­ing Com­pe­ti­tion this year.

The com­pe­ti­tion as­sesses the stu­dents’ flu­ency, ac­cu­racy, enun­ci­a­tion, pro­nun­ci­a­tion and smooth­ness as well as con­fi­dence and ex­pres­sion of the par­tic­i­pants. It was held in col­lab­o­ra­tion with the Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion, Hu­man Re­source De­vel­op­ment and Labour.

From the pre­lim­i­nary rounds of the com­pe­ti­tion, the best of the best from the eight dis­tricts in St. Lu­cia com­peted for the cov­eted ti­tle of “Courts St. Lu­cia Read­ing Cham­pion 2014”, as well as the op­por­tu­nity to rep­re­sent St. Lu­cia at the OECS fi­nals, held in Gre­nada on Oc­to­ber 16th, 2014. The of­fi­cial prize­giv­ing cer­e­mony was held on Thurs­day Novem­ber 20th at the company’s flag­ship store on the Chaussee. The Na­tional Read­ing Cham­pion, Miss Gabrielle Barthelmy from the Camille Henry Memo­rial School, col­lected her cheque val­ued at $3000 and a lap­top, com­pli­ments Courts. Miss Ebony An­toine from the Plain View Com­bined, 1st Run­ner Up, also col­lected her cheque for $750 and Miss Thea Jerome, a stu­dent of the Ta­pion Pri­vate School, ac­cepted her cheque of $500.

Courts St. Lu­cia would once again like to con­grat­u­late Gabrielle Barthelmy, our 2014 Na­tional Read­ing Cham­pion. The company would like to thank Her Ex­cel­lency, Dame Pear­lette Louisy, Gov­er­nor Gen­eral of St. Lu­cia; The Min­is­ter of Ed­u­ca­tion, Hu­man Re­source De­vel­op­ment and Labour, The Hon. Dr Robert Lewis; Flow St. Lu­cia for stream­ing the com­pe­ti­tion live; Dig­i­cel – Be Ex­tra­or­di­nary; The Lions Club of Castries; Exel Signs; Calabash TV; HTS TV; DBS TV; Ra­dio Caribbean In­ter­na­tional; Ra­dio St. Lu­cia and The Trophy Cen­tre. Spe­cial thanks to the Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion; CAMDU; Par­ents; Teach­ers and Prin­ci­pals from Dis­tricts 1-8 whose support of this ini­tia­tive has been tremen­dous.

As the company, draws the cur­tain on yet another suc­cess­ful stag­ing of the Schools Read­ing Com­pe­ti­tion, a lot more em­pha­sis has been placed on lit­er­acy in schools. Miss Gabrielle Barthelmy, the Courts 2014 Na­tional Read­ing Cham­pion, has promised to work closely with fel­low class­mates in St. Lu­cia to help de­velop their read­ing ca­pa­bil­i­ties as well as to as­sist in the mould­ing of fu­ture cham­pi­ons. She be­lieves that read­ing is the key to suc­cess as it opens doors to pos­si­bil­i­ties.
