It’s Shane Again!
Felix, the embattled head of the Saint Lucia Fire Service Association, has been re-elected as head of the association. Felix last year rallied fire fighters to stand up against what he described as illegalities within the fire service. This led to strike action by the fire service in September 2014 and resulted in the authorities transferring fire chief Leslie Fontenelle. The fire chief and the fire service had been the source of an inquiry in 2012.
More than a year after the completion of the inquiry, the findings had not been made public. According to Felix the findings pointed to several areas of misconduct by those at the head of the fire service. During the strike action the report was finally made public. In an address to the nation by prime minister Kenny Anthony, it was stated that the issues of the fire service were out of the hands of government and had to be dealt with by the public service commission. However, it was announced that one of the actions which would take effect would be the secondment of the fire chief to SLASPA.
The recent SLFSA elections have been a long time coming and have been marred by several delays. An election in May of last year was deemed incomplete and outstanding reports, it was said, were not submitted. Elections were rescheduled for a second time in May and again in November of 2014, but were never held. And so it was with much relief that the process was completed here this week. The election of a new executive to head the Saint Lucia Fire Service Association took place Thursday at the fire ser- vice headquarters in Castries. It was presided over by the Deputy Chief Fire Officer Lambert Charles. The new SLFSA executive team with Shane Felix as chairman includes secretary – Kenisha Jeffery, Assistant Secretary – Dwane Ferdinand, Treasurer – Alyn Roserie and Assistant Treasurer – Marius Charles. The Trustees are Mike Moncherry and Kendal Cadette.
